Co-Curriculum
Loreto College Foxrock is committed to the development of the full range of each students’ talents, aptitudes and potential. To this end, the school offers a wide selection of activities outside the regular school timetable.
Experiences on the stage, the pitch, debating competitions, science fairs and more, each contribute to broadening the horizons and opening adolescent minds and spirits to their own potential.
We aim to give our students a love of sport and prepare them for lifelong physical activity. Physical Education is an integral part of our curriculum across all years. Participation in sport helps build friendships, teamwork and a sense of solidarity. Sport builds resilience; it develops commitment and focus on the end game; skills that add to our students’ formation. These are the life-skills which become transferable in the years ahead. Participation in sport has also been shown to improve academic success
To encourage a high level of participation in sport and games, the Board of Management employs a full-time Sports Co-ordinator to oversee, organise and manage the coaching and development of a wide range of sports. The primary emphasis is on participation and enjoyment, within the parameters of good sporting practice, and entry to competitions.
Sport plays an important part in students’ lives and several of our girls are currently achieving success at county and international level in basketball, gaelic football and hockey. Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings are busy match-times as students travel to away fixtures and we welcome other schools to Loreto College Foxrock for competitive and friendly matches. We field numerous teams in each of our sports disciplines throughout the school year and compete in Leinster leagues and cups. Our Loreto schools network also delivers leagues in parallel to standard inter-school competitions, creating additional avenues for experience.
We offer a wide variety of sports to all students including athletics, badminton, basketball, cross-country, gaelic football, hockey, tennis, table tennis and orienteering. We also support our students with golf and sailing Loreto College Foxrock teams.
We have a committed team of sports coaches across several disciplines led by a dedicated sports coordinator.
Facilities for sport and fitness in Loreto College Foxrock are excellent with an all-weather hockey pitch and a multi-sports all-weather facility with six tennis courts in summer term. Indoors, students enjoy a large sports hall with basketball court and a fully equipped gymnasium (senior cycle).
Beyond Sports
In Loreto College Foxrock all students have the opportunity to learn life-long skills through our co-curriculum. Clubs and groups meet at lunch times and after school. From debating to cookery club, from science club to Justice and Peace, from Gaisce to St Vincent de Paul society; all of our students are encouraged to participate, to get involved in the school community. Through these extra-curricular activities, the students learn about team-work, leadership, society and culture.
MUSIC, DRAMA, DEBATING
Loreto College Foxrock has a strong tradition of cultural activities with music, debating and drama all part of life in our school.
In addition to providing Music as an exam subject for Junior and Leaving Certificate cycles our music department delivers Music as a co-curricular opportunity. Loreto College Foxrock has first-year choir(s), a school choir, strings and flute ensembles and our school orchestra. We perform and compete in Leinster and nationally.
Girls can study music as part of the Junior and Senior curriculum or can opt to take part in musical activities outside of the classroom. Students are encouraged to take part and can avail of tuition to learn an instrument, join a choir or get involved in developing their own vocal skills.
Debating has a long tradition in the school and is encouraged for the multifaceted benefits it brings to bear in public speaking and confidence during these formative adolescent years. Our students have consistently excelled in this discipline. Loreto College Foxrock teams regularly represent the college in inter-schools debating competitions. Students grow in confidence, learn to engage the audience and project their voices, to be focused, arrange their thoughts and speak with conviction, all of which are critical life skills.
Along with music and debating, participation in drama and the development of creative expression are important parts of our education ethos. Opportunities abound for students to take part in various productions throughout the year. Each term we witness individuals grow and develop. Student friendships flurish as a result of these creative endeavours. From Christmas variety performances to school plays, interschool musicals in TY to our annual Fifth Year drama production. As life skills are developed and individual talents shine, fundamentally great fun is had and magic happens!
Enriching the lives and the educational experience of our students.
